Howard County History Day Competition

Visit our Howard County Competition Awards Presentation.  A salute to all our participating students and congratulate to all our winners.

We are delighted to host our 17th annual History Day Competition in Howard County.  We are utilzing this site to manage our registration for students, teachers and judges.  Please use the appropriate tab above to complete your registration.

The 17th annual Howard County History Day competition will be held in a virtual format in March 2021.  Contest entries will be viewed remotely by judge teams, via shared Google drive folders and file links.

Student Interviews

In following the guidelines of the National and Maryland State History Day programs, we will not conduct student interviews as a part of the 2021 Howard County History Day Competition.  This decision was made in order to model our competition off the state and national no-interview formats.  Students do not need to be available the morning of March 13.

As entries will “stand alone.” Students are encouraged to utilize the process paper and annotated bibliography  to communicate with the judges.

Awards Presentation

There will be a virtual awards presentation to announce the winners at 3 pm on Saturday, March 13, 2021.  The presentation link will be available on the Community & Family Resource pages of both Secondary Social Studies and the Gifted & Talented Education program and can be viewed at your convenience.

Please feel free to email if you have any questions.

HCPSS History Day Judges

Thank you for your interest in serving as a volunteer judge for the 17th annual History Day Competition in Howard County.   This year's theme is Communication in History:  The Key to Understanding

Please prioritize your judging preferences when completing this registration.   Every attempt will be made to honor your category and division preference; however, ensuring complete judging teams may require adjustment.

The 2021 Howard County History Day Competition will be held virtually.  Judges will be notified of their assignments by March 2nd and are asked to dedicate approximately four hours, during the first week of March, to complete this service.  Those volunteering to serve as Run-Off Judges will be needed for another four hours during the second week of March.  More specifics as well as a detailed judge orientation will be forthcoming.  Our timeline is as follows:

  • 2/23/21:  Judge Registration Deadline
  • 3/2/21 - 3/7/21:  Virtual Judging Preliminary Round
  • 3/8/21 - 3/10/21:  Virtual Judging Run-Off Round
  • 3/13/21:  Awards Presentation

Thank you for your patience as we launch our new registration system.  We appreciate your partnership!

Please contact kelly_reichardt@hcpss.org if you have any questions.

**HCPSS Staff - If you are a NHD teacher sponsor and would also like to be a judge, it is recommended that you register your first name (or user name) as follows in order to differentiate between your teacher sponsor and judge emails.
